Engie will close its newest power plant in Chile after just five years ofoperations as part of the country’s efforts to become carbon neutral,the company said Monday.Commissioned earlier in 2019, the 334-MW Mejillones plant innorthern Chile will now close by the end of 2024.“This is great news for the Chilean people. Almost 700-MW of coalfiredplants will close early to be replaced by renewable energy, providingus with cleaner, cheaper electricity,” Chile’s Energy Minister, Juan CarlosJobet, told the COP25 climate change conference in Madrid.He added that AES had also agreed to bring forward by two yearsthe closure of its Ventanas Ⅰ and Ventanas Ⅱ plants to 2020 and 2022,respectively.
