Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Neil Chatterjee continued to dampen expectations for near-term action to revamp the agency’s 1999 natural gas pipeline certificate policy, discussing the possibility that FERC could elect not to alter its approach. The policy guides FERC’s decisions as it considers individual applications on interstate natural gas projects that are linking burgeoning shale gas supplies to demand areas. Under former Chairman Kevin McIntyre, FERC in April 2018 launched a notice of inquiry into whether it should revamp its approach to reflect market changes, amid heightened public scrutiny of pipeline projects and frequent legal challenges from environmental groups.
