Coal-based fuels, oil from tar sands criticized in paper as expensive, dirty

The Natural Resources Defense Council released a report last week which found that transportation fuels from coal and oil from tar sands and oil shale were expensive, uncompetitive and carbon-emitting.rnThe report contained little original research, but NRDC attorney Susan Casey-Lefkowitz said it did make a number of new connections, for example illustrating the role US energy companies play in keeping Canadian tar sands production profitable. The report used primary sources whenever possible, she said, and was carefully vetted by NRDC staff with expertise in the fuels and by members of the scientific community.
