Maryland utilities to solicit 1,643 MW, Pepco units seek 440 MW in DC, Delaware

Investor-owned utilities in Maryland will solicit 1,643 MW in wholesale supplies on January 14 to provide "standard offer service" to customers not buying in the competitive market. January will also see Pepco solicit 190 MW for customers in Washington, DC, and Delmarva Power go out for 250 MW in Delaware.rnIn Maryland, the 1,643 MW represents just a portion of the utilities' SOS needs, but they stagger procurements over several auctions, and sign contracts of varying lengths, from three months to two years. This is to avoid the rate shock of 2006, when utilities solicited all SOS power in a single auction while the wholesale market was very high, resulting in rate hikes as high as 72% (EUW, 13 March '06, 22).
