The Biden administration is proposing its first competitive offshore wind lease sale, announcing plans to lease eight areas in the shallow waters between Long Island and the coast of New Jersey. The proposed lease areas, in what is known as the New York Bight, could potentially generate up to 7 GW of power to supply electricity for more than 2.6 million homes, the US Department of the Interior said in a June 11 release. The Biden administration has set a target to add 30 GW of offshore wind power to the US energy mix by 2030 and in May approved the first major offshore wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts.
