Pilot licenses encourage US hydrokinetic projects

A hydrokinetic power developer is seeking a pilot project license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to develop a 5 MW ocean energy current project off the coast of Alaska. Ocean Renewable Power filed a draft pilot license application in April for its proposed Cook Inlet OCGen Power Project in Cook Inlet just north of Fire Island. OCGen is the design of a 1 MW water current generator model that ORP would use on the project.rnDuring the first phase, ORP said it would install one generator module in 2011 "for an initial year of environmental testing and monitoring along with analyzing the technological performance of the unit." The remaining four units, with a total capacity of 5 MW, would be added later.
