Kazakhstan has begun talks with Russia over sending crude from the giant Kashagan field via the existing pipeline, linking the two countries from Atyrau in Kazakhstan to Samara in Russia's Volga-Urals region, where it connects to Russia's national oil pipeline system. Kashagan is expected to start producing its first commercial oil by October at the latest, but with output expected to ramp up quickly to around 370,000 b/d, the partners developing the field need export options in place as soon as possible.
