The US Department of Energy's decision in May to grant approval to Freeport LNG to export to countries with which the US does not have a Free Trade Agreement has been taken as an indication that further approvals are in the offing, although the DoE has avoided a formal policy announcement, indicating that it will look at each proposal on a case-by-case basis. Cheniere Energy's 2.2 Bcf/d Sabine Pass project was the first to gain approval. There are currently 20 applications still under review. The DOE also recently backed the findings of a study it commissioned from NERA Economic Consulting, which found that LNG exports would lead to net economic benefits for the US economy. The report's assumptions and conclusions drew considerable criticism from industry groups opposed to LNG exports.
