Greek gas-fired generation up 42% on year in April as demand recovery consolidates

Gas-fired generation in Greece was up again in April after a strong March, relegating lignite generation to a lowly fourth place in the monthly mix, data from market operator Hellenic Energy Exchange SA showed. Combined cycle gas-fired output of 1.72 TWh in April was up 13% on March and 42% year on year as demand continued to recover from COVID-19 lows. Electricity demand of 3.66 TWh was up 11% on the year, with consumption up across low, medium and high voltage consumer groups. The dominance of gas and renewables in the domestic mix continues to increase, reducing the need for imports and lignite generation. Four-month 2021 lignite output of 2.05 TWh is down 6% year on year, despite 2020’s COVID-19-hit demand levels, while gross imports of 2.78 TWh are down 30% on the year.
