Alberta board halts plans for building critical 200-mile transmission line

Alberta utility regulators are scrambling to restore public confidence following their decision to abandon - after three years of hearings - a critically needed $600 million, 200-mile transmission line after a scandal arose over whether permitting was biased.rnAfter halting the hearings, the Energy and Utilities Board then told the Alberta Electric System Operator to go back to square one and re-file an application to prove the need for the line and the preferred route.rnIn a key step, the EUB also is recommending that Alberta's lieutenant governor appoint a three-member panel to the board temporarily to consider new applications. Current EUB commissioners would not participate.
