Boone Pickens urges Congress to lead way in shift to wind power, natural gas vehicles

After a welcoming storm of clicking cameras and lavish praise from a senator, T. Boone Pickens last week explained on Capitol Hill his plan for boosting wind generation and reducing US dependence on oil imports. The Pickens Plan will not be cheap, he admitted, but it is his very own, and he wanted to tell it. Pickens, who hopes to build a 4,000-MW wind farm in the Texas Panhandle, is advocating a crash program to generate 22% of US electricity from wind in 10 years (EUW, 14 July, 1). Wind currently contributes less than 2% of the nation's electricity.
