摘要

President Bush last week set a national goal to halt the growth of US greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 by allowing emissions from the electric power sector to peak in 10 or 15 years and then freeze. But even then, the electric utility industry said, technologies to lower emissions must be made available if the president's objective is to be met. Expanding energy efficiency efforts as well as nuclear power, low-emission coal technologies and carbon capture and sequestration remain critical components to a solution to global warming, according to the Edison Electric Institute. EEI President Tom Kuhn called Bush's remarks "thoughtful" in pointing to "the critical importance of technologies." Meeting the president's voluntary goal will "depend on how quickly we can develop and deploy a variety of technologies," said EEI spokesman Dan Riedinger.
