Demand surged for electrical generating equipment jn late 1998, overwhelming some manufacturers of gas turbines, who were forced to stop taking orders for new machinery after production backlogs reached the year 2004. The surge in demand may have peaked in 1999, as most orders have already come in from regions in the United States where high cost electricity and power outages mandated the need for reliable, low-cost electricity. Gas turbines are used to fly jet aircraft, power speed boats, run oil wells, and drive electrical generators. In the competitive market for electricity generation, power producers opt for gas turbines over competing technologies because of their low capital cost, abundant fuel supply and high generating efficiency.
