Pipelines and other midstream energy assets have historically n a profitable investment for smart investors and operators who are willing to be patient for the returns to roll in. These real assets typically create real earnings and real cash, and that was the mantra upon which Rich Kinder and Bill Morgan started Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. in February 1997 after purchasing the general partner of a small master limited partnership from Enron. The company's initial growth was on the products pipelines side, but it entered the natural gas transmission and distribution business in a big way in 1999 when it merged with KN Energy and changed the company named to Kinder Morgan, Inc. This transaction included Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPL), the 10,000-mile pipeline system that transports up to 5.7 Bcf/d from Texas to the high-demand Chicago market.
