摘要

The author argues that it is high time to relocate translatology, notably concerning literary and cultural translation, in the contemporary academic landscape in all cultures, including those of emerging nations, in the present era of globalization. It is submitted that, as a discipline related to social sciences and the humanities, translatology can be studied descriptively at two levels, namely as (a) contrastive linguistics, (b) and comparative literature involving cultural studies without necessarily 'belonging' to any of these disciplines. By dint of the plethora of elements and factors in translation and interpreting practice and theory, the field has its own subject matter, domains of research as well as methodology. It is argued that the methodology should be both aesthetic and empirical. Along with the acceleration of globalization, the function of translatology will become more and more manifest.
