By eliminating the mounting screw hole and using a pressure clip to mount the package to a heat sink, plastic power semiconductor packages can accommodate much larger silicon chips. The result is greater power control or higher efficiency or more reliable operation within the same chassis design. When properly executed, it has proven to be a cost-effective technique that can improve overall performance of discrete power semiconductors.
