Brown board turns white with curtain coater at Dong II Paper

Dong II Paperof Korea has becomethe first paper company in the world to use Metso's OptiLayer multi-layer curtain coater to turn brown recycled board into white liner without the expense and complexity of adding a white bleached fiber layer. Thus the company has been able to move into the white top coated board segment in Korea, taking market share by offering a superior product at better value. The new multi-layer curtain coater was installed on Dong ll's 4.1-m wide board machine 1 at the Ansan mill near Seoul in late 2008. With the addition of this equipment Dong II has been able to launch two new grades, which it calls White Liner (WL) and Coated White Liner (CWL). "Multi-layered curtain coating gives us enormous flexibility by putting the right properties in the right place at the right cost," says Jin Doo Kim, Vice President and Technical Manager at Dong II Paper. "Titanium dioxide for light scattering, for example, can be put in the second layer from the top, which frees up the top layer for adding printability properties and fine tuning.This meansthat ratio adjustments for properties like brightness can be easily made on the fly. At the same time, the precise curtain coating method gives much lower coating waste and broke."
