While compact fluorescents offer some energy savings, LEDs take energy savings to another level. The potential of LEDs (light emitting diodes) has been evident for some time, but it is only now that they are delivering on this potential. For architects, LEDs offer flexibility in illumination and colour; no heat gain, and a massive reduction in energy requirements. The brighter future of LEDs will be fuelled by the need for architects to conform to the BASIX demands for energy-efficient lighting in homes and the Green Smart lighting requirements for commercial buildings. LEDs also eliminate fire risk, as they produce little heat and can be handled even if on for hours.
