The role of student-run organizations within global health promotion initiatives: commentary and call for research

Cet article examine de manière critique les forces et les faiblesses associées aux organisations bénévoles internationales dirigées par des étudiants, en utilisant une initiative de 10 semaines sur la malaria à titre d'exemple. Ce projet a démontré qu'il existait un manque de compréhension quant à l'impact élargi de ce genre d'initiatives sur les activités d'autres organisations de développement. Il est nécessaire de mener des recherches pour étudier certaines questions qui se posent par rapport aux caractéristiques potentiellement gênantes de ces organisations, notamment (1) un manque de bénévoles qualifiés, (2) des projets à court terme avec des changements fréquents d'intervenants volontaires et (3) des objectifs potentiellement limités pour ces programmes. En dépit de ces limites, les programmes étudiants offrent des opportunités individuelles uniques d'acquérir et d'améliorer des compétences en matière de leadership.%This article critically examines the strengths and challenges associated with student-run international volunteer organizations using a 10-week malaria initiative as an example. The project demonstrated a lack of understanding of the broader impact of such initiatives on the activities of other development organizations. There is a need for future research investigating some concerns regarding potentially limiting features of these organizations including (i) a lack of qualified volunteers, (ii) short-term projects with high turnover rates of volunteers and (iii) potentially short-sighted program objectives. Despite these limitations, student-run programs offer individuals unique opportunities to gain and enhance leadership skills.
