Outsourcing came like a clap of thunder to the attention of information professionals in the U.S. in the summer of 1995. That's when General Electric Co. decided to outsource the operation of its headquarters' information service to Teltech. One result of that contract is that some information professionals perceive that they are threatened. Thoreau said, "why the hurry to succeed?" One response might be—because we must protect our jobs.
