Amid the crisis created by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), extra cleaning and sanitation create demand for more hourly help. But in areas where restrictions are being lifted and businesses are opening back up, there is growing competition for staff. Snagajob is an online staffing platform with 100 million registered job seekers and job opportunities at 700,000 employer locations in the U.S. and Canada, its website says. The company says that to lure workers, the best place to start is with an up-front job description. Snagajob offers tips in a guide to writing job descriptions: 1. Avoid misleading job titles. Be specific and use everyday terms. “Cashier” was searched almost five times more than the vague “team member” job title. 2. Be specific about job tasks and required skills. Workers need to know what to expect. 3. Provide the shifts as well as the hourly rate. Workers can more quickly decide if they are interested in the job. 4. Be specific about the job site. If you cannot provide an address, include a ZIP code. People want to know how far their commute will be. 5. Make the job search and application process smartphone-friendly. Some 90% of job seekers use a smartphone to look for work. 6. Keep it simple. About 70% of workers say one-click application is a key feature in deciding where to look for work. 7. Clearly list qualifications. Include any requirements that qualify or rule out a worker. 8. List appealing perks. Some of the most important are flexible schedules, tuition reimbursement and mentorships. Especially following the pandemic, people seek paid sick leave. 9. Respond quickly to applications. Snagajob recommends replying within 48 hours.
