With most of the country's conventional - and readily accessible -pools of oil and gas already drilled or under development, the extraction industry is turning to unconventional supplies trapped far below the surface in complex shale formations, tight sands or coal beds. Today, more than a dozen high-tech Canadian companies are tapping into these reserves using advanced hydraulic fracturing technologies, more commonly known as "tracking."
