Newbuilding activity has, not surprisingly, remained at a fairly low level during the last six months. There were rumours of various light construction vessel and multipurpose platform supply vessel designs ready to be ordered in the fourth quarter of 2014, but projects were put on hold amid concern about the market. Even so, FOSAS says there have been a total of eight orders placed since its last report on the subsea market, which was published in November 2014 - six in Asia and two in Norway. All of the vessels in question have 150-tonne cranes, but there are significant differences in dimensions and cost. Most are speculative orders, although that depends on how you interpret 'speculative'.
