Vessel operators in the Mediterranean have been warned about the security risks of working around the coasts and from ports in Libya. The civil strife engulfing the politically split country has led to attacks on ships operating to and from Libyan ports. The problems in the country are compounded by the fact that the official Libyan Government, as recognised by the UN and based in Tobruk, is heading towards bankruptcy. This has led to oil field and port closures, strikes and hope for the opposing forces. According to Mast security services, ISIL militants had consolidated their position in Sirte and Derna ports and were heading west towards the port of Misrata, which, at the beginning of June, was held by Tripoli-based Libyan Dawn. There is the risk of bombing of vessels entering any of these ports from opposing forces and on vessels sailing further from the coastline. The situation seems not to have hampered offshore operations yet, as Eni confirmed it discovered a gas field with the Bouri North exploration well in an area near the Bouri production platform. This is the second discovery Eni has made in the area this year.
