The legislation which has governed the operation of fatal accident inquiries (FAIs) in Scotland for over 30 years is to be reviewed.rnThe review of the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 will be led by Lord Cullen, who conducted the public inquiries into the Piper Alpha disaster and the Ladbroke Grove rail crash. It is expected to take around a year to complete and will examine the operation of judicial inquiries into sudden, suspicious or unexplained deaths, including deaths in the workplace.rnOne area that will be looked at is how FAIs interact with other inquiries such as those by the Health and Safety Executive. It will also consider the use of expert evidence, the legal representation of bereaved families and how inquiries into deaths in healthcare settings and in police custody are conducted.
