MPs get new protection

A Law that allows MPs to be automatically expelled from Parliament if they are sectioned with a mental health condition is to be abolished. Section 141 of the Mental Health Act 1983 states an MP must be automatically removed from their seat once they have been detained under mental health legislation for more than six months. In contrast, no such laws apply to MPs suffering from a purely physical illness, such as a stroke or coma, that prevents them from fulfilling their duties.
