With one of the safest railways in the world, the physical aspects of rail safety are well regulated by the UK's Office of Rail. Regulation (ORR). However, the ORR's vision for the rail industry is of one that is not only safe but also consistently achieves best practice in occupational health. In May 2010, the ORR announced its intent to give greater focus to the occupational health (OH) risks facing workers in the rail industry through a programme of work to improve the way in which the industry tackles OH issues, including the health risks attributed to ballast operations.
