Workers and Royal Navy personnel at HMS Sultan naval training base in Gosport were potentially exposed to asbestos after pipes lined with the material were left on a roadside after being removed as part of works to replace a hot water system at the base. Portsmouth magistrates court heard that Southampton-based VT Flagship Ltd was responsible for carrying out the work in September 2009. The company contracted Hertfordshire-based PPSL District Energy Ltd to remove the pipes, which were lined with asbestos insulation, and associated materials. PPSL in turn employed a local welding firm and pipe fitter to undertake the work.
