Coach company fined after worker crushed underneath bus

A Lancashire coach company has been fined after an employee died when a double-decker bus he was working underneath collapsed on top of him. In June 2017, Wayne Lannon was carrying out repairs under the bus in the car park of Chester Zoo. The bus had been raised by a hydraulic bottle jack and Mr Lannon had placed some wooden blocks underneath it to support it, however the bus rolled back off the jack, trapping Mr Lannon under it, causing fatal injuries. Chester magistrates court was told that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the death had found that Mr Lannon's employer, Brian Finch, trading as F E Coaches, did not have a safe system of work in place for preventing the bus from moving. The bus' parking brake had not been applied before Mr Lannon started working underneath it, and the bus had not been chocked to prevent it from rolling off the jack. In addition, HSE said Mr Lannon had not been provided with training and instructions in mechanical work or on the safe lifting of vehicles, and had not been advised about the type of repairs that were suitable to be made outside of the workshop.
