VIOLENCE AGAINST HEALTHCARE WORKERS

Healthcare workers are at risk of violence at work. According to clinical psychologist Raymond Flannery this can range from verbal abuse and racial slurs to hostage taking, sexual assault and even murder. The violent person is a US publication, but applies equally to healthcare settings in the UK.There are three parts: assessing and managing behavioural safety risks; an examination of four types of 'behavioural emergencies'; and self-defence strategies. Although Flannery draws on published research and practice guidelines, he uses narrative to reflect the kind of real-life scenarios likely to be encountered by healthcare professionals in different settings.
