1. Violence at work is any increased risk of human-perpetrated violence and/or crime that an employee may encounter due to the nature of the work or work setting - it includes both physical and verbal assault 2. Assailants tend to fall into the following general groups: angry customers who may become violent; certain individuals with psychiatric or other illness; domestic abusers; disgruntled (ex)employees; and those with a history of violent crime (juvenile delinquents and career criminals) 3. There are various theories as to why some individuals become violent, and these may help in developing organisational strategies to reduce risk 4. Workplace violence may have a range of negative outcomes for the individual, ranging from poor morale at one end of the scale, to death at the other 5. Psychological trauma reactions can range from acute distress to PTSD.
