The University of Edinburgh has been fined £10,000 for failing to implement health surveillance of research workers whose health was at risk as a result of exposure to laboratory animal allergens (LAAs). Two researchers began work at the University of Edinburgh in 2003 and both had declared that they were already allergic to rodents around the time of their appointments. Both continued to work with rats and were exposed to LAAs - known respiratory sensitisers with a significant health risk.
