1. A good drug and alcohol policy documents a company's commitment to support individuals, education and a fair disciplinary procedure 2. Testing requires consent at numerous stages - for example, when the sample is collected and during the medical review process - and can be withdrawn at any stage 3. The policy should make clear the potential consequences of withdrawn consent 4. Ideally, testing would only be for 'under the influence' situations; however, unlike alcohol, this is not practicable for drugs 5. Investment on awareness and education will be rewarded with a more robust drugs and alcohol policy and its effective application in practice 6. Regular reviews and updates are necessary
