Astudy of 16 subjects found that those who ingestedna high-protein shake suppressed the secretionnof ghrelin, the hormone that regulates hunger andnappetite, for a longer period of time compared to subjectsnwho drank a high-carbohydrate or high-fat shake, evennthough all beverages contained the same volume andncalorie content. The study, published in the Journal ofnClinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, investigated hownlong and how well each macronutrient suppressed hunger.nBased on blood samples taken before ingestion andnfor 6 hours afterwards, the researchers found that proteinnmost effectively suppressed ghrelin secretion, followednby carbohydrate and, lastly, by lipids. Interestingly, subjectsnwho ingested the carbohydrate shake experienced anrebound effect, in which ghrelin levels were suppressednat first, but 3 hours after intake, were noted to rise significantly.nThe study adds to the evidence that high-proteinlow-carbohydrate diets are effective at promoting weightnloss and that high-fat diets lead to weight gain.
