As we all know, losing weight can be challengingnat times for our patients. Whether it is skippingnmeals, portion control, high-fat/high-sugar meals,nor dining out; sometimes a meal replacement bar (MRB)nis needed to help correct these problems. Many foodnindustries are marketing MRBs to aid in weight loss andnthe obesity epidemic. Several studies have shown weightnloss with the use of an MRB for one or two meals alongnwith a reduced-calorie diet is typically 7% of total bodynweight in the short term (3 months) and remains overallnconsistent at 7%–8% of total body weight at 1 year fromnbaseline. A reduced-calorie diet alone has a weight loss ofn3%–7% of total body weight at 1 year.1nThere have also been studies showing increased dietarynintake of vitamins and minerals when using MRBs fornone to two meals a day. In a study published in NutritionnJournal, “Nutrient Adequacy During Weight Loss Interventions:nA Randomized Study in Women Comparingnthe Dietary Intake in a Meal Replacement Group with anTraditional Food Group,” both groups showed successfulnweight loss while improving overall dietary adequacy innthe group using MRBs.2
