Company suing to buy Bellefonte from TVA seeks NRC permit transfer

The company seeking in court to acquire the unfinished Bellefontenuclear plant in Alabama from the Tennessee Valley Authority iscontinuing to seek transfer of the construction permits to the twounits even as TVA said it failed to follow through on the purchase.Nuclear Development LLC is seeking permission from NRC totransfer the construction permits for Bellefonte-1 and -2, NRC said in aletter made public April 12.NRC asked in the letter for additional information from NuclearDevelopment, a company controlled by property developer FranklinHaney, before the agency can accept for review the company’sNovember application for the permit transfer.Nuclear Development had agreed in 2016 to pay TVA $111 million forthe Bellefonte site and initially had until November 14, 2018, tocomplete the transaction. In early November, the deadline wasextended until November 30.However, TVA said in December that Nuclear Development hadfailed to obtain the transfer of the permits prior to the closing date onthe transaction, meaning it did not meet its legal obligations inconnection with the sale of the property.
