Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory laid off 440 career indefinite employees last week, 115 fewer employees than expected when the lab announced its first round of forced job cuts in 35 years. Facing a $280 million budget shortfall, Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC-the Bechtel-led consortium that took over management of the lab in October-announced plans in April to lay off 535 of its most essential employees, the scientists, engineers and technicians that make up the core of the lab's workforce. It will make up the difference by cutting 100 employees from its flexible workforce after laying off 500 flexible employees earlier this year.
