The National Nuclear Security Administration is moving ahead with plans to establish a pit disassembly and conversion capability using mainly existing facilities, publishing a Notice of Intent this week to modify the scope of the project's Environmental Impact Statement. While cost and other details on the updated approach remain unclear, the move is expected to provide significant cost savings over previous plans, which originally included a standalone facility that was scrapped in 2009 due to cost concerns.
