U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Italian Minister for Economic Development Claudio Scajola have signed two nuclear energy agreements that may lead to construction of new nuclear power plants and improved cooperation on advanced nuclear energy systems and fuel cycle technologies in both countries. Italy is expected to be an important partner in building international consensus around the expansion of nuclear energy. The "U.S.-Italy Joint Declaration Concerning Industrial and Commercial Cooperation in the Nuclear Energy Sector," which was signed on behalf of the United States by Chu and Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dennis F. Hightower, affirms the two countries' interest in encouraging their nuclear energy industries to build new plants.
