In the last years, the Italian energy policy has been characterized by the decision to reorganize the energy sector to steer it on the side of a liberalised and concurrential model as required by the EC. In fact, since 2000, also the sector of power production is changed. By the statistics related to 2000, it's possible to consider that the medium efficiency of conversion was lower to the "state of art" for all the typologies of plants, the mix of fuel for the thermal power plants was composed principally from petrol by-products (about 46%), the renewable resources had a marginal role and the 15% of consumption of energy was covered by the import of energy. For a demand of 298.5 TWh (required by the national grid), about 44.5 TWh were covered by the import, about 50 TWh were produced by renewable resources (45 TWh by hydroelectric power plants and 4.4 TWh by geothermal power plant besides only 0.6 TWh by the wind farms).
