Catholic University Wins Large Grant to Research Rad Waste Immobilization

Catholic University of America has won up to $36 million to provide research and development to support the safe immobilization of nuclear wastes at the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C. The money will go to the university's Vitreous State Laboratory (VSL), which is considered a leader in the science of using a vitrification process to convert nuclear waste into a stable glass form considered far safer than other forms.rnThe lab is expected to be a subcontractor to its long-term industrial partner, Energy Solutions Inc., the Utah-based company with long expertise in radioactive-waste management.
