As nuclear power nears its 65th birthday, rnmy wife and I made a pilgrimage to its 1942 beginnings.rnMany people have heard the story: On December 2, 1942, Enrico Fermi and his colleagues brought about the first man-made self-sustaining nuclear reaction in "a crude pile of black bricks and wood timbers" (Fermi's words) called the Chicago Pile, in a squash court under the west stands of the University of Chicago's Alonzo Stagg Field.
