More than I million gallons of radioactive salt wasternat the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, S.C., have been processed for disposal in the six months since salt waste disposition began, Savannah River Remediation (SRR), formerly the Washington Savannah River Company, reported on July 2. The site's Saltstone facility achieved the milestone in late June. The SRS is the only DOE site that processes and permanently dispositions salt waste removed from waste tanks. Although the Saltstone facility has been disposing of other low-level waste streams for some time, the disposition of the salt waste stream began in January 2009 and is an ongoing process, according to SRR.
