The Calvert Cliffs Isfsi License Was Renewed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on October 23. Constellation Energy applied in 2010 to renew the license of the independent spent fuel storage installation at the site of the two-unit Calvert Cliffs plant near Lusby, Md. In 2012, Constellation was merged into Exelon Corporation, and the NRC's waste confidence rule was voided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The NRC's subsequent suspension of final actions dependent on waste confidence applied not only to power reactor license renewals and new reactor licenses but also to ISFSI renewals. The initial license for the Calvert Cliffs ISFSI would have expired on November 30, 2012, but because the NRC had docketed the renewal application before the suspension, the license remained in effect while the NRC staff was reviewing the renewal request. In August, the NRC adopted its new continued storage rule and lifted the suspension on final actions. The 40-year renewal keeps the Calvert Cliffs ISFSI licensed through November 20S2.
