Sce can use decommissioning funds for other tasks through an exemption granted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on September 5. Southern California Edison Company had applied in February for an exemption to allow some of the money in the decommissioning trust funds for the closed San Onofre power reactors to be used for spent fuel management and site restoration. The NRC has determined that there is reasonable assurance that sufficient financial resources are still available for decommissioning.
