A proposal to accept used nuclear fuel from germany for processing and disposition at the Savannah River Site will be the subject of a Department of Energy environmental assessment, the scope of which will be open to public comment through July 21, according to a DOE notice of intent published in the June 4 Federal Register. Acceptance of the fuel would help the United States achieve its high-enriched uranium minimization objective, the DOE notice states, by removing approximately 900 kg of U.S.-origin HEU from Germany for storage and disposition in a form no longer usable for an improvised nuclear device or radiological dispersal device.
