The west lake landfill will remain under epa authority, according to the Department of Energy. In July, U.S. Sens. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.) and Roy Blunt (R., Mo.), along with U.S. Reps. Lacy Clay (D., Mo.) and Ann Wagner (R., Mo.), sent a letter to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz requesting that the DOE transfer authority for the cleanup of radioactive waste at the landfill to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) (NN, Oct. 2015, p. 74). The West Lake Landfill, located near St. Louis, Mo., is an Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site. The members of the state's congressional delegation claimed that the site contains radiological material not associated with the Cotter Corporation, making it appropriate for FUSRAP. In a letter to Blunt dated September 10 and released by the DOE on September 17, the DOE said that neither it nor the Army Corps of Engineers "is in possession of new information suggesting that non-Cotter-affiliated material may be present at the West Lake site." The DOE said, however, that should new information come to light, it would assess whether a renewed inquiry into the site's inclusion in FUSRAP is merited.
