The management of hanford's water treatment facilities has been transferred from CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company, the contractor for the Department of Energy's Richland Office, to Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), the Hanford tank operations contractor for the DOE's Office of River Protection (ORP), the DOE announced on March 31. According to the DOE, the transfer will support current waste tank farm operations and the future operation of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant by aligning work between the Richland Office and ORP. WRPS will manage and operate the Effluent Treatment Facility, the Liquid Effluent Retention Facility, and the Treated Effluent Disposal Facility in Hanford's 200-East Area. The existing staff of about 45 employees was transferred from CH2M Hill to WRPS as part of the facility transition, according to the DOE. In operation for 20 years, the Effluent Treatment Facility treats water contaminated with low levels of radioactive and chemical waste primarily from the 242-A waste tank evaporator, groundwater treatment systems, waste disposal operations, and Hanford's K Basins.
