SONGS CANISTER SCRATCHES DON'T POSE A SAFETY ISSUE and are well within design safety margins, according to a white paper released by Southern California Edison on June 3. SCE and Holtec International conducted inspections on eight of the 29 spent nuclear fuel canisters already emplaced in dry storage at the closed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in Southern California. The inspections followed an August 2018 incident in which a Holtec multipurpose canister became wedged in the dry storage system's cavity. According to the white paper, the deepest measured scratch of an inspected canister, caused by downloading into the cavity, was 0.026 inches deep. This is well within conditions accounted for by the canister design, even in the event of unexpectedly high contact forces, SCE said.
