Fortum & Uniper Sweden to Dismantle Sweden's Oskarshamn & Barsebak Nuclear Power Plants

Fortum and Uniper Sweden have signed an agreement on a dismantling project at the Oskarshamn and Barsebak Nuclear Power Plants in Sweden; Fortum was awarded the contract by Uniper Sweden, a Fortum subsidiary, in a competitive bidding process, according to a June 9 statement. Uniper is performing large-scale decommissioning of Oskarshamn Units 1 and 2, and Barsebak Units 1 and 2 in one common program. The duration of the agreement is about one year, and the work is estimated to be completed in the summer of 2021. Barsebak Units 1 and 2 (600 MWe BWRs), located in southern Sweden, were shut down in November 1999 and May 2005, respectively. The two units, which began operating in 1975 and 1977, were shut down early due to political pressure from neighboring Denmark. E.ON, which owns a 54.5 percent stake in OKG, operator of the Oskarshamn plant, decided in October 2015 that Units 1 and 2 (473 & 638 MWe BWRs) would be shut down permanently. Unit 3 (1,400 MWe BWR) was unaffected by the decision.
